My name is Connor Barwin. I am twenty-one years old and am the youngest of four boys. I grew up in Detroit and came to the University of Cincinnati in 2005 with no idea what I wanted to go to school for. It is now my fourth year at UC and I am a secondary education major. My focus is the social sciences and when the time comes I plan on either going back to Detroit or to Chicago where my parents and two of my three brothers live now. When I am not in school the majority of my spare time is devoted to playing football at UC. And my favorite website is New York Times, which I probably go to every time I am on a computer.
Reflection: So far in my computer tools for teachers class I have learned a lot more then I thought. The biggest thing I have learned thus far is how hard it can be to integrate technology in your classroom. I've also learned if you do want to integrate technology in your classroom successfully you need to be creative and always prepared. I have also learned how much there is on the web to help teachers. For example, the rubric assignment we did with the rubric wizard on the web made it so much easier to create a rubric then having to just use Microsoft word.
Standards
I. Technology Operations and Concepts
A. I fulfilled this standard in our class by learning a number of new and different technologies teachers can used to their advantage. For example I learned how using excel to make a teacher grade book can be much because of the formulas you can use that will find averages and other totals for you. II. Planning and Designing Learning Environments and Experiences
C. I fulfilled this standard in our class the day that we went over how to determine which websites were creditable and which ones should not be used in the classroom. The exercise we did in class was very helpful and pointed out a number of easy ways to determine whether a website was good or bad, such as looking for things such as when it was last updated or what kind of things are being advertised on the website.
III. Teaching, Learning, and the Curriculum
D. I fulfilled this standard when we had to plan out a real lesson plan with our group and then teach a forty-five minute class where we each had to control and teach for fifteen minutes ourselves. During part of my fifteen minutes I had to manage students that were using computers and the internet to learn about the country we had given them. I had to make sure they were using the right websites and not having any problems with their computers while i had to manage the rest of the students that were using books and atlas's to do their research.
IV. Assessment and Evaluation
A. I fulfilled this standard by learning how to use the internet to help you find ways as a teacher to assess and evaluate your students. Specifically I used the rubric wizard we were shown in class for an assignment. I also used the rubric wizard again to evaluate our students in our final project.
V. Productivity and Professional Practice
B. I fulfilled this standard by reflecting on what I have learned in this class early on in the quarter in the reflection we had to write and I also fulfilled this standard by reflecting on all these standards and how they have been a part of this class.
VI. Social, Ethical, Legal, and Human Issues
B. I think I fulfill this standard because of my background and my up-bringing. Because of the diverse surroundings that have surrounded me every since I was in grade school I think I have a real understanding of the way that every child doesn't have the same opportunity to learn about technology and when I am a high school teacher I will make sure I teach all of my students what they need to know to use different technology for their educational benefit.
