Hello all! I am a senior studying secondary education with a concentration in integrated language arts. Right now I am starting to get into teaching, starting with the practicum this fall. I have been wanting to be a teacher for as long as I can remember. I have plans to get a master's degree in TESOL/TEFL, although that is going to be awhile from now.
I am 21 years old and have been living in Cincinnati my whole life. I have a cat named Melvin, who is like a furry son to me. I have an older sister and a younger brother. Most of my time is spent reading and studying and freaking out (not too badly though) about class in-between. When I'm not doing any of those things, I like to watch the travel channel. On occasion, I check my facebook page and emails. I am not a fan of myspace and have enjoyed not having a myspace page. My favorite band is incubus. I've been listening to them for about nine years and I've seen them in concert twice so far.
Overall, I think I'm a pretty boring person. I like to stay home and watch movies. I do like to laugh though!

I think that by creating this rubric I was able to apply the ISTE standard of applying technology to enhance productivity. This is because of the act of making a rubric online makes creating a rubric less stressful and not as hard. By having preset things to add to the rubric, there was not a lot of extra thinknig that had to go on. Everything was simplified for you. Having the assessment tool ready to make lets me focus on the work that the students do before the final product is due. Reflection/Artifact for Test/Quiz
I found the test wizard to create the test to be an easy way to create tests for the students. I think that by making the test on the wizard that it applies to the ISTE standard of "plan strategies to manage student learning in a technologically advanced environment" under Planning and Designing Learning Environments and Experience. This comes from the way that the students would have to obtain information to take the test. By creating a test the students are able to be checked for their learning and retention of the information that was in the online article. The test that I created was under several formats, because I feel that it would be the most fair when it comes to the different types of learners. Some students need a little more help in remembering some things than others, so it is the most practical to divide the test into multiple sections. Reflection on Ethical Uses of Technology
I found this to be the most interesting thing I've learned in the class so far. This is because learning the ethics and ways that teachers are able to bypass laws is something that can be applied to any classroom, whether it has a lot of technology or not. I know that when I start my field experience next quarter, I know that there are things that I can still do to bring technology into the classroom, when I am told to not expect much from the urban schools. The quiz was fun to do because the answers made me think twice about what I thought was ethical. I liked to learn that there was so much that teachers are allowed to do that no else can. I think that with the knowledge that is gained from this class period comes great responsibility. Teachers have to be careful of when they may be crossing the boundaries of what is and is not ethical when it comes to the use of technology in the classroom. From this specific class, we were able to use the ISTE standard under Social, Ethical, Legal, and Human Issues. When we use the technology and abide by the ethics laws, we'll be modeling and teaching legal and ethical practice related to technology use. As teachers, we may not explain how we were able to get some of the cool things, but we are at least by example able to model that we have gone through the right paths to make sure that we acquired things legally.
The gradebook that I created exemplifies a ISTE standard under the Assessment and Evaluation section. The standard states that the teacher "use(s) technology resources to collect and analyze data, interpret results, and communicate findings to improve instructional practice and maximize student learning." The gradebook on Excel allows for me to be able to analyze the data from the grades that I take from my students. Being able to use Excel makes analyzing the data really easy. Not only can I take the averages of their grades, but I am also able to create charts so the students can see where they stand as a whole. By using this feature I could maximize student learning because I can visually see what students need to improve on as well as what they are doing well in. For me, I am personally not a fan of Excel, but I see that it is a great resource that can help me grade faster and more efficiently. I think that any teacher in any subject area can use Excel efficiently to maximize their students' learning. Reflection on Lesson Presentation
The lesson plan that I had done with my partner was, I think, a great use of technology. It was great because the students were able to do things at their own pace. This is something that I would find to be important. Students should have the freedom to do things at their own pace because it is not possible for someone to get the full effect of a lesson at the same time. I also think that this lesson was good because it allowed the students to not only use Word, but they were also encouraged to use the internet in the making of their project. By allowing students to do this, the project reflected the ISTE standards under Teaching, Learning, and the Curriculum letter c. This project really encouraged students' higher order thinking because they had to figure out a way to get all the requirements of the project to fit on the front and back side of one 81/2" x 11 sheet of paper. The students were given freedom as to which pictures they could use as a part of their travel brochure. This reflects the second half of this standard because the freedom encourages creativity. Reflection on Classwork and Development Throughout the Quarter
As the class is coming to the close, I've realized that throughout the entire quarter that all of the students in this class have exemplified one of the ISTE standards under Technology Operations and Concepts. From the first class and all the projects that been done, we've been "demonstrate[ing] continual growth in technology knowledge and skills to stay abreast of current and emerging technologies." Each assignment was a little more technologically advanced; there was more work involved and a different technology in use. Also, the textbook that we've created with the wiki is another great example. We have gained knowledge of different technologies as well as how they would apply to our different disciplines through the textbook. The things that we've learned about as a class have been as simple as Word and Excel to something cutting edge like SMARTboards and the use of IPods.
