Hey guys! My name is Sarah. I'm a senior in Secondary Education concentrating in Social Studies. I have lived in Cincinnati my whole life, but never thought I would go to school here. Now that I'm here, I'm really glad I did. It's great to have my family close by. I have two brothers, Matt and Ben. And my parents are great. My dad actually just finished his Masters in Education so this year is his first year as a teacher and I think I can learn a lot from his new experiences as a teacher. I live in Clifton with 5 other girls and am involved in the Cincy Navigators. I also lead a youth group for the middle and high school students at my church in Colerain. That is my favorite thing that I do. It's awesome to get to witness the change in their lives and get the opportunity to impact the students there. I guess that's why I decided to become a teacher. I also love hanging out with my favorite people, cooking and reading. I chose to focus in Social Studies, because I love stories and seeing how the past and present are connected. I graduate in a year and still don't really have a clue what to do next.

That is a picture of me and two of my best friends. We are on a boat in Maine. I am on the far right. The girl in the middle has been my best friend since middle school. Her name is Sarah, too. And the gril on the left is Tiffany and I live with her.

Standards, Artifacts and Reflection:

I. Technology Operations and Concepts
Teachers demonstrate a sound understanding of technology operations and concepts. Teachers:
B. demonstrate continual growth in technology knowledge and skills to stay abreast of current and emerging technologies.

This class would be an example of this standard. We learned about technology that would help us be more organized as teachers and we also learned where to look for lesson plans and games that we can implement in the classroom. I learned how important technology is in the classroom and have gained motivation to make sure I'm continually up-to-date. As a teacher, I plan to take advantage of the technology available to me and also share with other teachers what we have found. That way we can hold each other accountable.

II. Planning and Designing Learning Environments and Experiences
Teachers plan and design effective learning environments and experiences supported by technology. Teachers:
D. plan for the management of technology resources within the context of learning activities.

I think an example of this would be the 45 minute group lesson plan. We made sure to maximize the time students had with the internet with our limited resources. We also had activities planned to keep them occupied while they couldn't have time on the computer. This was also a very guided exercise making sure students were on task. The environment was specifically designed for this project to allow students the most valuable time on the internet.

III. Teaching, Learning, and the Curriculum
Teachers implement curriculum plans that include methods and strategies for applying technology to maximize student learning. Teachers:
A. facilitate technology-enhanced experiences that address content standards and student technology standards.

It's important for teachers to integrate technology in a meaningful way, not just to use it for the sake of using it. It must be applied appropriately and address what students need to know about technology. An example of this is my lesson plan. Anne Frank and the Children of the Holocaust The lesson plan encourages students to navigate the internet with enough guidance to keep them on the right track Students need to know how to find information on the internet. So this lesson benefits students in two ways. First they learn about how the Holocaust effected children, which fits into the standards and they also learn the useful skill of navigating the internet.

IV. Assessment and Evaluation
Teachers apply technology to facilitate a variety of effective assessment and evaluation strategies. Teachers:
A. apply technology in assessing student learning of subject matter using a variety of assessment techniques.

An example of this would be my rubric. I used technology to formulate a rubric so the students would be prepared for how they would be assessed on their assignments. This would help me stay organized and also helps the students understand ahead of time how they'll be graded.

V. Productivity and Professional Practice
Teachers use technology to enhance their productivity and professional practice. Teachers:
C. Apply technology to increase productivity.

An example of this would be my gradebook. Using excel would help to keep me organized as a teacher and also cut down on the amount of time that I would spend calculating grades. Therefore, I could spend more time preparing for lessons and more important things instead of the tedious job of maintaining a grade book.

VI. Social, Ethical, Legal and Human Issues
Teachers understand the social, ethical, legal and human issues surrounding the use of technology in PK-12 schools and apply those principles in practice. Teachers:
D. promote safe and healthy use of technology resources.

An example of this would be the list of rules we created as a class. The situation was a tricky one, because the software in place to protect the students also inhibited them from doing their research. We devised a list of rules to make sure that students would stay on task while on the internet, but that they would also be protected from inappropriate sites. The list can be found here: Computer Rules

One thing that I have found to be very valuable from this class is the importance of classroom environment. Everything needs to keep moving in order to avoid down time and teachers should be equipped with back-up plans. I have also learned that students need to be active and interactive. This adds to the learning experience. Technology can play a key role in the classroom as long as it used appropriately and fits within the environment. It's use should be monitored and guided. It's an important skill for students to learn and can add to the learning process when used in the correct way.
