My name is Katie Fischer. I am currently a sophmore here at the University of Cincinnati. When I graduate I want to teach third grade. I work for a catering company where I have worked for 2 years, when I am not playing hockey. I just made the newly established UC roller hockey team. I am the only girl on the team. I am 19 almost 20 years old. I have 2 brothers. I enjoy traveling around the country playing hockey on my travel teams, this summer my team won silver at the biggest national championship in the platinum division in San Jose, California. I also love to golf and wake board or water ski out on the lake. In the winter I love to go snow skiing.
I.Technology Operations and Concepts
With this standard you must introduce an introductory skill. This reminded me of our final project presentations that each group presented to the class, especially the groups that were specified to early childhood because in the older grades, most students have already learned introductory skills on computers or other means of multimedia and they adapt easily to technology. In our project we taught the basic tasks needed in how to write and draw on a smart board. When we were done, however, Janet showed us some of the amazing programs other people have invented where they have games or stories that have been created for students where they can drag and click on different items and drop them to where they want just by the touch of their hand. I found this very insightful and before this class, I had no idea you could create programs like this, or how to use templates off of the internet.
II.Planning and Designing Learning Environments and Experiences
This standard is another standard that could be applied in the planning of our lesson plan for our final project. In the project we used multiple types of learning because of the age group we chose was so young. We did not want a teacher leading the class the whole time, so instead we split the class into groups and then only used the technology in set time limits while also bringing key items into play like: touch, taste, and smell of real sunflowers that went along with the book, The Sunflower Went Flop. With our lesson plan we also included fact cards and work sheets for the students to complete. This seemed to have a very good outcome because we were limited in how our classroom was set up and how we were to have a whole class participate on just one Smart Board for 45 minutes.
III.Teaching, Learning, and the Curriculum
There are several times throughout the quarter where I have learned different ways of using technologies in the classroom that I never would have used before. Examples of this would include the first day in class where we all did the introduction project with the video camera, which is how we all did adaptations to a story. This sort of project could be adapted for many different types of stories or creative projects. Another time this quarter where we used technology in a situation that I never thought of using it would be through the use of an ipod. When Janet did the Antartica project, there was a station with different sounds that you match to what you think is the correct animal. This type of project would be great for students especially in the grades I am looking to teach.
IV Assessment and Evaluation
This has to do with my lesson plan World Pizza's. In this lesson plan, students would be analyzing different types of subject matter they researched from all around the world and putting it together to create a world pizza. From this they would create a product and market it to others and analyze which way sold best or what they could have done differently to help sell their pizzas. They would be analyzing their results and interpreting them on Excel documents and communicating in a group setting.World Pizza
V.Productivity and Professional Practice
During this class I have learned how to do a lot of things that I did not know how to do before. Examples of this include rubrics and lesson plans, though this is something I knew I would have to be doing as a teacher, I had never learned how to do it before now, so it is the first step in my learning process as becoming a teacher. One day I will be a master of lesson plans and rubrics, but for now I am only at the start. I’m sure even as I think I have begun to master these things, newer faster ways of doing them will come out and I will have to learn how to do these as well. Through lesson plans and rubrics, not only can I lay out my class clearly, but I can also have hard copies to show to parents when they have questions as to why I might be doing something in my classroom, which is very important especially in the grades I want to teach, because some might question the teaching philosophies of grade school teachers.
VI.Social, Ethical, Legal, and Human Issues
Teachers need to always be aware that they are setting good examples for their students with ethical, social, and human issues. With these issues comes the use of technologies and the rights involved with them. One major issue we discussed in class concerning this was the ethical decisions teachers must make when showing certain movies and making copies of disks. You must know the laws associated with these things before just going and acting when you are a teacher or you might not be setting the right example for children. By setting a good example, you might also want to explain what you are doing, like with what we discussed sometimes things like Disney Movies are supposed to have you call and get movie permission from the company before viewings in classrooms; not all teachers follow these guidelines nor do children know these rules so teachers might want to explain how the rules work before just going about breaking the rules so that there is an explanation that it is for learning purposes only not self gain.
Reflection
Before taking this class, I thought I knew a alot about the technologies we used in class, but after we started using all of them I realized I probably only knew half as much as I thought I knew, so this class taught me a ton of things. Some of the things that we learned in excel I have already found useful in classes I am taking as time saving, these are commands I never knew how to use before that are simple things. I know if I can already find these small hints useful on excel helpful on programs I am working on that things like rubrics and grade books will come in handy. I think the small things that I have learned in this class will help me along the way in the future, and I am very glad that we created this online textbook/website for the class so that I can refer back to it for inspiration.
My "AH HA moment" happened after my group presented our final project on the Smart Board and Janet showed us all of the different types of things and templates you can use on Smart Board. I found this to be one of the neatest forms of technologies I have ever seen in my life and I know if I thought this, children would love to learn on a technology like this. A technology that is hands on interactive is something I think children need because it is something they are doing, the Smart Board is good for this because it allows children to get out of their seats and move about the classroom and use fun colors, shapes, or animals. I am still amazed by how intricate the templates were that were created that teachers could use.
