k&b.jpgHello! My name is Katelyn Cohen. I am a sophomore and the University of Cincinnati and I am majoring in Secondary Education with an emphasis in History. I grew up in the Cincinnati area in the suburb of Anderson Township. I was Born in upstate New York, and have lived in Cincinnati for nineteen years. I have a twin sister and a sister who is one year younger than me. We all go to UC together and it is a blast. I also have a boyfriend named Bret, who I have been seeing for almost a year.

I am involved in many activities other than school. This summer I worked as an assistant manager at a private swim club in Anderson Township, and also lifeguard part- time. I also am very involved in with my local church and participate in many community service activities. This summer was my third year participating and serving for the Appalachian Service Project. ASP is a mission trip in which groups from around the United States come to the Appalachian states and repair homes for a week. ASP is a very rewarding experience and I hope to work for their summer staff this summer. If you are interested in the website here is the link!www.asphome.org
I also like to run, listen to music, and have a good time with my friends and family.

"Ah Moments"

Through my computer tools for teacher’s class I have learned several “ah” moments which are helping me develop into an effective teacher. Recently I have learned about the digital divide among technology within schools and I am learning how to make the most of my given resources in the classroom. Also, I have learned a lot of creative lesson plan ideas though my classes online text book which I can use in my future classroom. Last but not least, I have learned to successfully make a grading rubric online and I realize making rubrics are not as easy as it seems! Hopefully throughout the rest of the quarter I will learn more useful tools which can prepare me to become a successful teacher who is knowledgeable about technology.

ISTE STANDARDS

I. Technology Operations and Concepts
Teachers demonstrate a sound understanding of technology operations and concepts. Teachers:
A. demonstrate introductory knowledge, skills, and understanding of concepts related to technology (as described in the ISTE National Educational Technology Standards for Students).

The Computer Tools for Teachers course has taught me introductory knowledge and skills in regards to technology for the classroom. Throughout the course I have learned how to use the computer to construct a rubric, a test, and grade book on Microsoft Excel.( ) Learning how to use basic Microsoft Word, Excel, and Internet Explorer will give me more opportunities for creative lesson plans in my future teaching career.

II. Planning and Designing Learning and Experiences
A. design developmentally appropriate learning opportunities that apply technology-enhanced instructional strategies to support the diverse needs of learners.
B. apply current research on teaching and learning with technology when planning learning environments and experiences.
E. plan strategies to manage student learning in a technology-enhanced environment.

I think teachers should plan and design effective learning environments and experiences supported by technology. Using different types of technology in the classroom enables a teacher to provide a variety of different ways to teach to students particular learning styles. For example, if a student is a visual learner, using a Power Point presentation would benefit the student because of the pictures and colors used in the presentation can help the student remember information learned in class. Furthermore, current research has shown that those who have a digital divide or limited use of technology in the classroom are at a disadvantage. Although computers may become unreliable in the classroom, but software programs like Encarta are usually affective and a reliable use for technology in the classroom. Computers also provide students with the opportunity to learn through web activities and programs. One lesson plan I discovered suggested a web site which demonstrated how a student could run their own lemonade business. The web activities are easy for the students to use and are a fun way get students interested in learning about a subject. Lastly, strategies must be made in the classroom if unlimited technology is available. If computers are available to all students, students can do more individual work, or only use a few computers at a time and use the station process. ||

III. Teaching, Learning, and the Curriculum
A. Facilitate technology-enhanced experiences that address content standards and student technology standards.
D. Manage student learning activities in a technology-enhanced environment.

During my final presentation my group used technology to enhance the students learning about world geography. The students participated in an online scavenger hunt () in which students searched particular web sites to find information about a certain country. Students were able to engage in technology while addressing the specific subject. Also, my group was able to manage the learning activities by having separate researching stations. My group wanted students to be familiar with researching information by studying books, maps and atlases. Giving more options allow students to be strong with computer technology and using non- computer sources.

IV. Assessment and Evaluation
Teachers apply technology to facilitate a variety of effective assesment and evaluation stategies. Teachers:
A. Apply technology in assessing student learning of subject matter using a variety of assessment techniques.
C. Apply multiple methods of evaluation to determine students' appropriate use of technology resources for learning, communication, and productivity.

When evaluating my students work I will use technology which will assess student learning and subject matter. Through Computer Tools for Teachers I have learned how to make tests and quizzes online to provide a variety of questions to evaluate my future students. I have also learned how to make a rubric online which adds to the multiple methods of evaluation that use technology. I will be able to the rubric to evaluate student’s projects or papers on learning, communication, and productivity.

V. Productivity and Professional Practice
Teachers use technology to enhance their productivity and professional practice. Teachers:
B. continually evaluate and reflect on professional practice to make informed decisions regarding the use of technology in support of student learning.

I believe teachers should use technology to enhance productivity and professional practice. Reflecting on the technology based information I learned in Computer Tools for Teachers through using technology I have been able to use an online test maker to create tests for my future students.( Looking back the test maker was hard to get use to at first, but it turned out to be an interesting way of creating a test or quiz to evaluate students. Being able to make a quiz easily and efficient while using a variety of different questions increasing my productivity as a teacher because now making a test is organized and simple with few errors will give me more time to focus on making creative lesson plans for students without spending hours making a test.

VI. Social, Ethical, Legal, and Human Issues
Teachers understand the social, legal, and human issues surrounding the use of technology in PK-12 schools and apply those principles in practive. Teachers:
A. A model and teach legal and ethical practice related to technology use.
B.Apply technology resources to enable and empower learners with diverse backgrounds, characteristics, and abilities.
In my future classroom I plan to teach the legal and ethical practices of technolgy use. Also, there are many ways where I can apply technology to have students learn about diversity. Students can use Microsoft Word and the internet to research and write about a culture which is different from their own. During the activity I would encourage students to use creditable sources and give severe consequences for those who plagiarize. Depending on the number of computer resources the students can use the internet, library books or stations for the same amount of time so each student receieves qual advantages with the resources available.
