Hi! My name is Kara Shaner. I am a sophomore at the University of Cincinnati and I am majoring in Middle Childhood Education in math and history. I have a twin brother named Kyle and he goes to Eastern Kentucky University and is majoring in Fire Science. I was bon in Cincinnati and lived there untill I was 6 when I moved to Mason. I went to Mason Highschool befor coming to UC. I work as a waitress at Gold Star Chilli and I have worked there for three years. I LOVE watching football and I am obsessed with the Cincinnati Bengals, through the good and the bad... Even though I know that it is mostly bad right now! I love watching any and all sports though. I go to alot of Bengals and Reds games. I go to every UC football game and basketball game.
I am a pretty down to earth person that just likes to sit back and watch football or a movie with some friends. I love all kinds of movies expecially funny movies and scary movies. I listen to all kinds of music as well. If you looked at my iTunes you would see the most random collection of music ever. I don't really have any one type that I aways listen to, it just depends on my mood.

STANDARDS

I. Technology Operations and Concepts

Teachers demonstrate a sound understanding of technology operations and concepts. Teachers:
A. demonstrate introductory knowledge, skills, and understanding of concepts related to technology (as described in the ISTE National Educational Technology Standards for Students).
B. demonstrate continual growth in technology knowledge and skills to stay abreast of current and emerging technologies.

In the Computer tools for Teachers class I have learned how much technology is not only important in the classroom, but also very helpful. I thought that I knew a lot about the technology being used in classrooms but I have learned that technology changes rapidly and there are still many things that I do not fully understand. One of these being the Smart Board. Before we used one in class, I had never even seen a Smart Board. The websites made available to us and the use of it in class has really helped me understand them. I now know not only what currently is being used in classes, but I look forward to seeing what new technology springs up in the future. I have also learned that technology can be used to help organize a classroom. For example the we made is an easy way to keep your grades organized and easily accessable.

II. Planning and Designing Learning Environments and Experiences

Teachers plan and design effective learning environments and experiences supported by technology. Teachers:
A. design developmentally appropriate learning opportunities that apply technology-enhanced instructional strategies to support the diverse needs of learners.
B. apply current research on teaching and learning with technology when planning learning environments and experiences.
C. identify and locate technology resources and evaluate them for accuracy and suitability.
D. plan for the management of technology resources within the context of learning activities.
E. plan strategies to manage student learning in a technology-enhanced environment.

The lesson plan that i added to the online textbook is a great example of this idea. The lesson plan incorporated Microsoft Word into a lesson plan which is a program that is usually seen as being used to write papers and that is all. By using the program to create a book mark, you are showing the students that technology can be used in many different ways depending on what you are trying to accomplish. This is also a great lesson plan because it can be changed and adapted to a students individual learning styles. With this lesson plan, it is easy to monitor what the child is learning and how they are applying the technology. You are testing them on many different ideas besides the actual historical facts. This allows students to learn multiple ideas at once, through technology, without feeling overwhelmed. This has also taught me that there are many different activities that can be used in the classroom to help educate students on technology and on the subject being taught.

III. Teaching, Learning, and the Curriculum
Teachers implement curriculum plans that include methods and strategies for applying technology to maximize student learning. Teachers:
A. facilitate technology-enhanced experiences that address content standards and student technology standards.
B. use technology to support learner-centered strategies that address the diverse needs of students.
C. apply technology to develop students' higher-order skills and creativity.
D. manage student learning activities in a technology-enhanced environment.

Taking the class Computer Tools for Teachers has taught me so much about using technology in the classroom. I am going to be a math teacher, and I always thought that there would pretty much be no room for me to use technology. The only way I was really taught math in school was the teacher writing the notes on the board and the students would copy them down, then do problems out of the book. This class has taught me that there are many different ways to use technology not only in the lesson plans, but also in assessing the students and keeping grades organized. I thought that I knew enough about technology but I am learning that technology, especially in the classroom, is a rapidly changing thing. I know now that there are many ways to use technology and that there will always be new ways to use it into a class, even a math class.

IV. Assessment and Evaluation

Teachers apply technology to facilitate a variety of effective assessment and evaluation strategies. Teachers:
A.
apply technology in assessing student learning of subject matter using a variety of assessment techniques.
B. use technology resources to collect and analyze data, interpret results, and communicate findings to improve instructional practice and maximize student learning.
C. apply multiple methods of evaluation to determine students' appropriate use of technology resources for learning, communication, and productivity.

The that I made for class supports this idea because I used technology to not only help the students in the classroom doing the project and to learn through that experience. But I also used technology to make the rubric to evaluate the student. By using the website to help me create an evaluation for the students. By using this website it made it easier to create this evaluation because of the technology available to me.

V.Productivity and Professional Practice
Teachers use technology to enhance their productivity and professional practice. Teachers:
A. use technology resources to engage in ongoing professional development and lifelong learning.
B. continually evaluate and reflect on professional practice to make informed decisions regarding the use of technology in support of student learning.
C. apply technology to increase productivity.
D. use technology to communicate and collaborate with peers, parents, and the larger community to nurture student learning.

I believe that this e-portfolio is a perfect example of this standard. We are adding our different lesson plans, reflecting on our progress, and using this to post new ideas to share with everyone. Before this class I did not know that this website was available for people to use. This is a great way to use technology to share ideas with fellow teachers, and also to make websites and documents easy for your class to access. Not only can you look at your new ideas, but you can also go back and reflect on things that you have added in the past.

VI. Social, Ethical, Legal, and Human Issues
Teachers understand the social, ethical, legal, and human issues surrounding the use of technology in PK-12 schools and apply those principles in practice. Teachers:
A. model and teach legal and ethical practice related to technology use.
B. apply technology resources to enable and empower learners with diverse backgrounds, characteristics, and abilities.
C. identify and use technology resources that affirm diversity.
D. promote safe and healthy use of technology resources.
E. facilitate equitable access to technology resources for all students.

The
digital dividevideo that we watched and discssed during our online week of class is a great example of the problems teachers are facing today when it comes to diversity in the schools and the technology available and used. My group was assigned a classroom with limited access to technology and as a group we had to figure out a way to help encorporate all of the lesson so that the students still had the same chance to learn.

Reflection

I have learned so much taking this class that I know I would have never figured out on my own without this class. When you are a teacher, it is very important that you are up to the current trends in technology and you need to be able to adapt your lesson plans to changing technology. I have learned a lot not only about using technology in my own classroom but also different things that I can do now with technology. There have been a lot of "Aha" moments for me in this class. Especially when we were learning the different things you can do with excel. I had never thought of using excel for a grade book or in a lesson like the group in class did. I know now that there are so many other things you can do with excel than just make a spread sheet. The SmartBoard lesson was also another "aha" moment for me. I had never even seen a smart board and learning to use it will be very helpful for me in the future.
Creating my lesson plan with my group also helped because I had no idea all that went into creating and planning a lesson. It also helped me realize the different problems that you can face. It has helped me learn how I will have to go about making plans in the future and to know that you will always have to make changes to anything you plan for your class. Overall I believe that this class was a huge help for me not only with technology now, but also for me to come back and look at the material when I have my own classroom.
