Contributor: Samantha Davenport
Subject Matter: A Former President of the United Statesexternal image amhis_presidents.gif
Grade Level: 3rd-6th grade
Description: In this lesson, every student will pick a former President of the United States. They must research and present the information that they have gathered to the class. The information may be obtained through the internet, books, reference books, and newspapers. From this information, timelines based on the President's biographical information will be made. The timelines will be constructed by using Microsoft Excel. This is a good lesson because it gets students familiar with using Excel, and it can show students that many other subjects besides math can be incorporated into Excel.
Computer Environment/ Resources: In this lesson, there will need to be a computer for every student. These computers need to have internet acess, so that students can surf the web for information. These computers also need to have Microsoft Excel installed on them. There also needs to be a computer with a projector, so students can present their timelines to the class.

Description: Students use the Internet to find basic facts about US Presidents and then use Microsoft Word to create bookmarks with the President's picture and facts and print it out. Then, they trade them with other students. This lesson plan is an exemplary use of technology because it uses not only Word Processor but also the Internet. Most students think that learning about history and American Presidents is boring, but with this project they will have fun creating and decorating the bookmarks for other students. They not only use the technology in the classroom but they are also learning the lesson at the same time.

Computer Environment/ Resources: The students will need Internet access, access to Microsoft Word, and a printer. It is also good if they have access to a laminator, a hole punch, some card stock, and other decorative materials but this is optional. There should also be a computer lab with enough computers for every student but it is possible to do this in groups if there are not enough computers. The teacher will also have to allow 1-2 class periods for the students to research and then create their bookmarks.
