Hi,my names Dana Lotz and I'm a sophomore in college at UC. I still live at home with my family therefore I commute to school everyday I have class. I live about 30 mins north of Cincinnati so its not that bad of a drive. I'm majoring in Early Childhood Education and I would like to teach either kindergarden or first grade. I have two brothers named Connor and Garrett and they are both younger then me. I also have one pet. We are currently looking for a puppy to bring home but at the moment we have one hamster. I use to live in New York when i was little which was where my youngest brother was born but we moved back to Ohio. I went to Mount Notre Dame high school which is an all girl private school located in Reading, Ohio. I enjoy arts and crafts, the internet, animals, movies, hanging with friends, bowling, and so much more. I currently have a job at Things to Remember at Kenwood mall that I just newly started. Two summers ago I took modeling classes which was fun but I graduated from the classes and stopped doing it but I would like to get back into doing that because I really liked the runway.
"AHA Momment"
I've had a lot of AHA moments in this class but one that stuck with me was making the gradebook. I always thought teachers wrote gradebooks. I never thought that they could use excel. Now that I know I will defintly use excel. Its something that I probably should have known but I had no idea how to do it until that class we had about using excel for it.
ISTE Standards:
Standard 1:Technology Operations and Concepts.
Part B: Teachers demonstrate continual growth in technology knowledge and skills to stay abreast of current and emerging technologies.
Technology is always going to update its self through out life and its the teachers job to stay updated on it to correctly teach their classroom using new technologies as they come about. If the teacher doesn't keep updating the students won't get the full effect of it or they won't learn about it correctly. I learned more about PowerPoint when my group had to create a lesson plan and act like the teachers using games. We came up with the idea of using jeopardy for our final assessment. Since we found one online but it didn't work the way we wanted it to we had to make our own. I didn't know how to do it therefore each of us made up the questions and one of our group members made the jeopardy. When she came back we looked at it and she explained how she did it. I never knew you could do that on PowerPoint. Also I learned how to make brochures using word from another groups lesson plan. Yet from another group I learned how to use a smartboard for different subjects. At first I only knew how to use it because in my highschool we had smartboards for math but that was the only subject. In this class I learned how to use it for different lessons and the different lesson plans you can use on the smartboard. This will help me because if I do have a smartboard in my classroom as a teacher I will then know how to use it but learning technology doesn't end there. When I do become a teacher I'm sure there will be other technologies that come out by then that I will have to learn to better teach my students.
Standard 2: Planning and Designing Learning Environments and Experiences.
Part E: Teachers plan strategies to manage students learning in a technology-enhanced environment.
I learned how to do this when my group had to act like teachers by making a lesson plan using games. I've never had to teach the class before and this was my first time actually acting like the teacher. It was a good realization on what is going to happen to some lesson plans that I make while being a teacher. We used this standard in our group when we had to make strategies and back-up plans incase one of our online activies for our stations didn't work. We also had a strategy on how to manage our time based on the online game we were using and walking around while watching the students to see when they were finished to know when to switch stations. Theres a lot of strategies that goes into teaching a class and helping the students learn. These are just to name a few but others may include having your students raise their hand before asking a question or having different math stations, teaching different kinds of math. We did this by teaching adding, counting, subtration, more or less, and word problems. This lesson was something I would consider using in the classroom but I would fix the problems before using it.
Standard 3: Teaching, Learning, and the Curriculum.
Part D: Teachers manage student learning activities in a technology-enchanced environment.
While I did the rubric wrong because I made my own rubric, I still learned how to make a rubric online and how to grade students on the activity they are doing. Being a Early Education major I probably won't use a rubric unless I decide to be a third grade teacher but usually teachers don't use rubrics in kindergarden or first grade. When I made the rubric I meant to read the assignment and I forgot to do it while making the rubric. This is something that I can't do when I become a teacher is forgetting things. I remembered later but that was after I sent it. This was my first time making a rubric and now I know how to connect teaching, learning, and curriculum together by using a rubric. Now if I ever decide to use a rubric I can do it rather then some teachers who may not know how and the more teachnology I learn, the more I can use in my teaching and my curriculum. Here is my rubric.
Standard 4: Assessment and Evaluation.
Part A: Teachers apply technology in assessing student learning of subject matter using variety of assessment techniques.
Reading the Problem-Based Learning or the PBL article for an assignment and then making a test or a quiz on the things we read really helped me realize what to test my students on when I become a teacher. Now that I think about it I also used this standard when I made the test/quiz. I used it by using different types of assessments using the important information from the reading. While some of the information I used wasn't so important but I used things such as true and false, fill-in the blank, and mulitple choice to find out what students test better on what assessment. Students learn different ways and learn better on certain assessments then others. This is why its good to make a variety of assessments on the test or quiz. The teacher should also give some of the other assessments so they get experience with answering the other types of questions. Some students also are just bad test takers therefore the teacher shouldn't limit the test or quiz to just one assessment.
Standard 5: Productivity and Professional Practice.
Part C: Teachers apply technology to increase productivity.
For one of our assignments in this class we had to make a gradebook using excel. This applys for this standard because if I were a teacher I would use excel over paper or a book to keep my grades in. This increases productivity and makes it a lot faster and easier to find out averages or percents instead of having to calculate it out with a calculator. The faster I do things the faster I can get my stuff done and move to the next thing I have to do. This will help me as a teacher by allowing me to move faster through my things and having more free time. I'm glad we had to do this assignment and I got the chance to learn how to better use my time and make a gradebook. Its a good tool to have and I will defintely use excel when making a gradebook when I do become a teacher. Here is my gradebook.
Standard 6: Social, Ethical, Legal, and Human Issues.
Part D: Teachers promote a safe and healthy use of technology resources.
In one of our classes we had we learned about what is copyright or plagiarizism and what is not when using something from the another source such as the internet. This taught me how to use technology safely and not get myself into trouble. I could also teach my students this when I become a teacher. In school the teachers are always saying not to plagiarize and how bad it is but in reality not everyone is taught how to correctly copy something with out plagiarizing. If everyone knew how to do it correctly and would teach their students how to do it there wouldn't be as many problems. Showing students how to be safe using technology by not giving out their personal information and being careful what they download is also important to teach. While technology is great to have and good to use in the classroom there are many things that make it bad also. This makes not only the teachers job but also the parents job to show and keep their students and children safe by teaching them what to do and what not to do. After this class we had about the legal and illegal ways of using technology I now can better teach my students when I become a teacher and if other teachers don't bother on teaching their students this I can definitly make sure I do.
Final Reflection:
Being in this Computer Tools for Teachers class I've learned quite a bit of new things that I could use when I become a teacher. A few things I've learned were how to make a lesson plan for the class, how to better use technology, how to make a gradebook and a rubric, and also how to monitor stations. There are other things I learned also like how to use my limited technology in the classroom to its full effect. I really liked making this online textbook rather then using a textbook. I learned a lot about wikispace since I never had heard of it before this class and making the lesson plans helped me realize how many lesson plans are out there that I could one day use in my classroom as a teacher.
The lesson plan we taught in class helped me a lot to realize what excatly its like to be a teacher. You can only watch teachers so much and see what they do but you never get the full feeling and effect that you do when your actually up there teaching. It was a fun and great opportunity to have. Doing it in groups also helped because some of us for the most part have never actually taught a class and for us to go up alone and do everything alone it would be hard. Having two other people help you and then also acting like its a real class with 45 minute classes helped us realize everything that we could get done in those minutes.
Making the gradebook and the rubric also helped me by showing me tools I could use as a teacher. Rubrics and gradebooks are used all the time in teaching and is something that is really needed to know when going into that field. Learning this helped me understand what they look like and how to make them while also showing me some programs I could use one day.
Overall I learned a lot and I'm glad we had the opportunity to do these projects. I can now use them later in life when I eventually become a teacher to help teach my students. Technology should be used in the classroom to its full advantage and I will now know how to better use it. I realized one of the important things as a teacher is to stay on top of the new technology field and the new technologies that come out of it. The more you stay on top the better you can teach your students. Technology is an ongoing learning proccess and should never be left behind.
